Denver newbie – need help planning family trip

Wife and I are looking to relocate within the next couple years (currently in TX).  Denver is on our short list although it is the one location on our list we have not visited.  We are planning to spend a couple weeks out there next summer, want to spend a week or longer in the mountains and a week in the city.  We have a daughter who will be 4 then.  We are looking for a place to camp for a week, or possibly a nice cabin.  Must be in close proximity to moderate hiking and fishing.

I know this is a vague description of what I am looking for so maybe just shout out some specific locations that you think would get us fired up about living in the Denver area and I can do more research myself.
