My husband and I live in Ohio.  He just got a new job and has to go to Portland, Oregon for six weeks!  He has all his Mondays and Tuesday open, along with every afternoon after about 3pm.  I am planning to go out to visit around the last week of April or first week of May.

I need recommendations for where we could do some day hiking while I am visiting.  And I would love to give him and his coworkers who are also going some ideas.  (All four guys seem to enjoy hiking and are excited about being able to go out there and check out the scenery.)

We don’t mind a bit of driving (a couple hours in each direction) to have a bit of an adventure.

    So, any ideas?

There are a lot of good options. Number 1 destination is the Columbia Gorge (“the Gorge”) for day trips in April. Many of the best places in southern WA and northern OR will still be snowed-in unfortunately. I’d be happy to meet with your husband for a beer and bring maps to show him where I’d go. Also, he should be aware that we have a number of good shops where you can try on ULA, HMG, and SMD gear and we have a Montbell. And . . . no sales tax (not so great for the state budget but good for buyers!) PM me if you want to get in touch!

The “West Hills” are adjacent to downtown.  Like Lower MacCleay Park to Pittock Mansion.

oregonhikers.org has trip reports.  And the field guide – click on “field guide” at upper left.

There is a book “60 Hikes within 60 miles of Portland”.

For forays into Washington, check out http://wta.org. There is a searchable database and trip reports.
