(Technically not really a MYOG post so if this is not where I should post this I’ll delete and post it somewhere else)

First hello to all of you and sorry if this post is a tad too long, I hope you are all safe and well, lockdown is about to be partially lifted in my part of the country (France) and I’m so looking forward to it.

I searched the forum but I didn’t find a post addressing this specific issue so if this has already been answered, please perdon me.

My hikes often take me to mountainous areas so I always carry a really warm sleeping bag because up there you never know how the weather might turn even in springtime and I’m keen to keep my toes.

I had to get a new bag and I copped one which is extremely warm even more so than my previous one, the problem is it’s gigantic, it was a steal so I bought it but it takes almost a third (I’m barely exaggerating) of my 60L backpack (even compressed like crazy) and even if I’m not an UL fundamentalist there’s no way I’m going to waste so much space on a sleeping bag.

I’m rather tall but length and width wise there’s enough room for a NFL player in this one so I was wondering if I could get it cut down to my height and frame by a professional and this begs the question : May it lose some warmth? I looked at the seams, they look like normal ones to me but I know next to nothing about sewing and I’m not much of an expert about sleeping bags’ insulation.

Allow me to reformulate my question: Do you think my sleeping bag risk losing warmth if I get it cut down to my size? Considering air inside the bag also works as an insulation layer, if it’s too tight will it defeat the purpose of a warm sleeping bag? And are there specific ways of sewing them, specifically the zipper, to give them a good insulation?

Thank you for the time you spent reading this, take care and may our paths cross on a trail.

Hello Pierre, I have a way big sleeping bag because I don’t like turning the bag every time I change from side to side. I give up warmth for freedom of movement.

If you change your bag so it is more like a mummy bag (tight fit) it will be warmer than it is now.

Yes, the draft tube is essential around the zipper. I tried to do without it, and had to send the bag back and have it attached.

Erica beat me to the bunch.  A well-fitted bag will be warmer than an over-sized bag.  Yes, air provides insulation, but you have to heat it all up first with your body.  Its like the difference between using a small electric heater to warm your bathroom versus using the same heater to warm your entire living room.

It sounds very much as if it is cut as an overbag. I’d be interested in seeing pictures and the actual flat size.
