    I have 4 or 5 free days in early April, and I’m thinking about driving from the Front Range over to Colorado National Monument to get out for a few nights. Since it’s a short trip, I don’t want to drive much farther. Of course, solitude is a high value. I know it’s a popular area near trailheads, but does anyone know NO THOROUGHFARE CANYON? Can I get away from people in the middle section? Or something out of the way near the Monument?

    I’d recommend Dominguez Canyon. You have various options there, including Little Dominguez Canyon, which is not heavily traveled.

    These Pmags articles may help you. Living in western Colorado, I find his descriptions of this area to be right on the money –

    Even in April, water may be an issue, so plan accordingly. And, in case this applies to you, Colorado National Monument does not allow dogs on trails.

    Enjoy your trip. Spring is a great time to hike and camp out in these parts.

    Thanks for the input. I appreciate Pmags blog and suggestions, most of which I’ve visited. It is nice country to explore, especially in spring.

    @Dan
    . I know Big D canyon, but I’ll look into Little D.

    Thanks for the heads up, but no, actually I’m not a dog. So I should be OK on that score. :-)
