Our recent acquisition of a dog has really thrown a wrench into our beloved Zpacks Duplex. Any recommendations for a 2.5 person shelter?
Most of our trips these days are in the Washington Cascades, but we’re not too afraid of condensation. We have a medium size dog of about 30 lbs. Sadly the Triplex is outside of our budget. We do have a Black Diamond Mega Mid that we can use for part of the year, but would love some bug protection.
May 13, 2021 at 3:06 am #3712368Not much is available now in the tent market due to companies having to scale back. This and product changes over time make most of the old threads on this subject not too helpful. For example, Black Diamond had a tent, the Skylight, which might be ideal, but it appears to be out of production, as do a number of others.
Even though you will accept a single wall, you also want bug protection. That may mean a double wall, and it may rule out most of the mids (pyramids). But it would also enable more comfortable trips to more well watered areas that can be quite beautiful.
Maybe a Mutha-Hubba NX, a small 3P tent from MSR would be plenty spacious for you all, It is free standing, a proven design and under 5 lbs. It would also keep your small dog in the tent if tempted to gett spooked and run off, especially in thunderstorms or from fear of other animals that are about. Note that this tent it is a conventional inner first pitch, so cannot be pitched dry in the midst of a downpour.
But it is not superlight like some of the tents you mention. Faced with a 1P and 2-dog situation, I modified a solo tent with two vestibules to turn one of them into part of the inner tent. OK for a solo, but for 2P, the second vestibule is needed for the comfort of the second person. And it doesn’t sound like a major mod is what you want anyway.
Good luck. It should be interesting to see what others may suggest.

May 13, 2021 at 4:50 am #3712370Nemo Firefly? 68d floor is nice and thick for the pooch. Packed weight is 3.5 lbs. It is not too bulky when packed down. Probably snug with dog though..
If you looking for more interior space.. maybe check out Six Moon Designs Lunar Duo? It is in stock.. not stupid expensive and ships fairly quick.

May 13, 2021 at 6:38 am #3712400We have a 45 lb. dog and have found that the Tarptent Stratospire 2 works well for two people and one medium sized dog. We keep our packs and non-sleeping stuff in the large vestibules. That way the interior of the tent has enough room for all of us to sleep in. We haven’t found that we need to add the Sidecar.
May 13, 2021 at 7:59 am #3712410The tarptent SS2 is a good choice. I’ve a 85 pound lab who has plenty of room to stretch out in the vestibule. I also have the side car but he doesn’t like it much and it’s not easy to put it in place. Try to find the latest model where the struts are easy to remove so tent will pack down horizontally in your pack. Prob the biggest complaint.
