Companion forum thread to: Backpacking with my 2 Teens – Pecos Wilderness, NM June 4th – 8th 2023

First, I want to thank the group here at BPL – especially Mina Loomis, Luke Schmidt, and others who gave trip recommendations and advice.

We only had the first week of June available, so possible locations were limited.  I ended up planning routes through the Pecos Wilderness, Lost Creek CO, Great Sand Dunes, and Black Elk SD to have options based on weather…

Great trip report. I’m glad you closed the loop from your early planning thread with this trip report. Nice to see another trip report with teens. I strongly believe in the importance of spending time outdoors in nature but I think it can particularly impactful for young people.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Thanks for sharing, David. I agree with everything Matthew said and it’s nice to read the report after the planning thread. You got a little bit of everything out there! Pics looks beautiful.

Glad it worked out so well. Sounds like you had a solid adventure. Are the kids planning next years hike already?
Those pictures bring back good memories. For a few years i did a hike there on or around Memorial Day. Somehow I never got the hail storm experience. That might be one time a hiking umbrella would be nice.

Great write up for what looks and sounds like a fantastic trip with the kids! Best thing you can do is keep them involved and keep them excited about doing outdoor activities like this.

I enjoyed reading your trip report.  You have a couple of strong hikers!  We (the teen backpacking club I volunteer for) just took our first trip back to Pecos Wilderness since our 2019 trip.  There have been changes since we were last there.  The weather was great.  There were challenges, and the kids braved them well.  I should send in a trip report too, if I can figure out the new system. :)

That’s great to hear Mina.  I’d love to read about it.  And yeah – I’ve been watching the weather out there and I’m jealous that we couldn’t go later in the summer.
