Hey…planning my AT thru for next year. I am doing it very budgety and healthily (hopefully :P…my plan is to do mostly mail drops (to hostels/outfitters instead of PO’s when possible). Yes, I know you can do it without mail drops but I want to eat HEALTHY and cheaply.  Some dietary issues involved.  Will cook and dehydrate for a week or so before setting off. I might also use amazon credits (easy and often free for me to get) to get some dehydrated bulk food and repackage as well. Then for towns, I will have cash, and less digestive guilt to, as I read on Carrot Quinn’s site, “EAT ALL THE THINGS”

Since I know a lot of people develop cravings throughout I thought I’d not pre pack boxes, just going to send my “requests” in to my mailing person. Also will have a variety of things ready.

Anyone else mail drop the majority of their thru? What tips do you have? How many different meals did you prepare ahead of time? Favorite snacks or meals you were craving towards the end? How long did it take to dehydrate and pack everything?

How about storage, did you ziplock or vacuum pack when re-packaging?  How long were things good for?

Also I will add that I will be getting a fair amount of food for free, so yes, it is worth it financially as well.
