Not sure what the technicalities of that walk-in fee are, but I believe it is meant for those walking in on the road entrances. I believe it’s purpose is to discourage passengers getting out of the car and walking in alongside the road past the toll booth while the driver only pays for one person and then the passenger getting back in the car inside the park. I’m sure over the years they have seen it all and adjusted the policy accordingly.

I have walked into kings canyon from Inyo and I can’t remember if I paid that fee or not. I’m assuming you would pay the fee at the national forest ranger station when getting your permit? If it actually applies to backpackers.

Billy, when I have driven in to yosemite and seki they charged me for a vehicle pass, not for how many people were in my car.

Yes… Justin I think you are right.

I must have been having a brain fart… maybe remembering something from times past. And hard to get my head around the idea that backpackers are supposed to pay to enter a National Park on a trail during a backpack. Wonder how many backpackers pay up?
