I’ve never seen an MLD Spirit Quilt with poncho headslot, so I can’t copy one. Is there anybody out there who can describe a Spirit headslot, or better yet some post pics of one?

I’m just afraid the 10d nylon shell and thin Climashield might not be strong enough. I don’t know. Ideas on how to do the mod would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have not done one but I think I would stitch it sort of like a giant button hole and then cut the slit open. Then I would see on a flap sort of like a fly on a pair of pants to cut the draft. Try googling some pictures.

I would like to see what you come up with. A few days ago I emailed Ron at MLD about retrofitting a head slot to my Spirit 38. He said it wouldn’t be a problem but that I would have to wait until after Summer.  If DIY is easy enough I may just go that route so that I can use it this Summer.

I wouldn’t think your materials would be an issue.  The Spirit uses 10d fabric and comes in a 50° version with a head slot.

I like the giant buttonhole idea. I would think that you would also have to bind the edges of the slot with a grosgrain or something similar. That would prevent the corners of the slit from tearing and provide a good base for the closure, i.e.: snaps, velcro, buttons, etc.

I wish Ron Bell still posted how to information here on BPL. I’m determined to install a head slot on the Prodigy. It’s like wasting a key function of the quilt by not having a head slot… at  least with a synthetic Summer quilt anyway.

Add to the head slot Prodigy an OR Helium rain jacket I can handle overnight lows down to 50*…..AND keep warm while sitting around camp. Allows me to leave an upper layer at home.
