So I got a few more Voile bindings, as well as the Rottefella Super Telemarks.

The three Voile bindings I have on my floor (two HD Mountaineers and one of the basic cable bindings) all fit significantly differently. The cable binding fits the duckbill of my boots quite snugly on the 2nd click, but the binding is so narrow that the sole of my boot rubs hard on the lip on the side of the binding, which would clearly damage the boot in no time at all. The 2nd Mountaineer binding fits a lot tighter than the first when set on the third click, but still not tight enough. How's that for quality control? All three are made on the same equipment.

In contrast, the Rottefella binding fits great. The second click is snug and the third click is locked down. Also no problems with the boot sole fitting in the binding. Works great. The Rottefella is lighter too (5.8 vs 6.6 oz per binding) mostly due to the fact that the sheet metal used for the binding is thinner. Still looks super burly – the Voiles seemed quite overbuilt in that regard.

Now, the only problem is the total lack of snow. Badger Pass ski resort has closed their doors until it snows again. As a result Yosemite closed the Glacier Point Road at Chinquapin. Out come the snowshoes and a different itinerary instead.

Thanks for this interesting followup, Andrew.

Am going to now check my multiple Voile 3-pin configurations for variability! (I do know they all work).

Sorry about Badger. You probably know, but there is a Nat. Park to the north–about the same drive–with tons of snow. Think, "smell of hard boiled eggs."
