First, two things:
- I have no connection with Erin and Hig other than an strong appreciation of what they are doing.
- This is a crowd sourcing pitch.
The project is a film about a short (for them) journey with their two young children. Here is the link to kickstarter project
I know there are some strongly held opinions about crowd sourcing here as well as folks who have been burned by not receiving promised "product". Since I won't be responding to any replies along those lines, here is my point of view. I don't crowd source often or for the purpose of buying product. The few times I've "invested" it has been for the purposes of supporting something I wanted to help with … and this happens to be one such thing.
Nov 25, 2014 at 12:39 pm #2151955Yes, the problem people have is not getting the promised product. Like for example, the promised BPL packrafting series.
Hig and Erin (and Bjorn for that matter) have a history of delivering their products. They have 2 quality (IMO) books out and another documentary. One knows the baseline of what they are likely to produce. It would do their non-profit no good to fall short of their promises.
This is much different than someone with no background or credibility other than their word asking for $$ to fund their PCT thru hike documentary or whatever people are asking for these days.
Crowdsouring can be good. But as always, caveat emptor.
*I have no personal connection to any of the people named above.

Feb 24, 2015 at 11:05 am #2177445The last project I backed, the guy took the money and ran. Radio silence ever since even after I reached out to him once or twice.

I've been very pleased with Heart of Alaska and what Bjorn's doing with it. There have been 12 updates sent to the backers of this project since December 5th. There's still a ways to go but I'm optimistic that the final product will be worth the minimal risk and wait.
I'm still fairly indifferent about Kickstarter. Certainly some cases out there where scumbags can show their true colors but it's brought some great products (eg Peak Design) to the market too.
All this to say atta boy Bjorn! Keep up the good work.
