I have a neoprene case that holds my dslr with a lens attached. But I need a case for an extra lens I want to bring. The lens would be 3"x4". What do you guys use? Up until now I've only used a thick sock and tried to keep it padded around clothing. But I want something that will protect it more. I only have a week until my next backpacking trip so a DIY solution would be nice instead of buying something.
It depends on how expensive the lens is and how much it weighs.
Bubble wrap makes good padding, but it is nice to put it within a protective shell. I suggest the plastic of a round gallon jug (e.g. for windshield washer solution).
I have carried my telephoto lens in a cardboard packing tube used to ship large prints. I found one that was slightly bigger (to allow insertion of some bubble wrap) and cut it to length.
I work for a company that happens to ship large prints so I had a variety of sizes to choose from in order to find one that fit. Maybe they sell these in packaging supply stores?
