Going to be doing the west rim trail in mid to late october. My pack weight should be around 6 or 7 lbs. Trying to figure out my clothes for 3 days 2 nights. Assuming the weather is hi 40 to mid 50 during the day..hi 30 to mid 40s at night (if anyone claims different please speak up), chance of rain.
My sleeping setup will be patagonia silkweight base layer top/bottom. Goose feet down socks/overbooties, silkweight balaclava. Of course I will have my EE Enigma quilt (30 or 50 degree depending nighttime lows when I go.)
My hiking clothes (worn), will be salomon trail runners, smartwool lightweight socks, patagonia silkweight base layer (top), GoLite running tights and patagonia running shorts (liner removed).
I will pack a pair of patagonia houdini wind pants and shirt. Patagonia down vest and outdoor research helium 2 rain jacket. 1 pair of liner socks.
The liner socks depends if it will be cold and rainy for a substantial amount of time..As with the OR helium 2 shell.
I will also bring my Z packs micro fleece hat..maybe depending again on temps.
I will also pack smartwool liner gloves and (if it rains), Z pack over mitts.
I'm on train now just brainstorming..so i can't weigh this stuff now, but I will! I am a very warm person..day and night/sleeping. I am pretty sure this will protect me at all costs. I plan on moving all day rain or shine and I know I will be heated up from that. I'm not worried about being cold or wet with these clothes, do you think anything is overkill? In the past years, winter and fall, I always tend to over pack clothes and food..and this is where I am at trying to lighten my pack weight. I hate carrying extra stuff that I don't use so I am hoping this stuff is going to be what I need. Again, just brainstorming here well before I actually go on this trip, and assuming the weather is what I stated above. Of course if it's going to be hotter, colder or raining more, I will alter as needed…

I think late October calls for a 30 degree quilt, especially if in the north of PA.

What shelter and pad? Those make a big difference.

Katabatic bristlecone bivy and MLD Patrol shelter. My pad is GG nightlight torso.

I've hiked the West Rim Trail numerous times (most recently in April) – please PM me if you'd like any info or suggestions.

Unlike many trails in PA, you'll be able to camp on really soft (and insulating) duff in most campsites which will help you. I used a GG Torsolite a couple of years ago when I last used my Gatewood Cape – it worked well.

Thanks for the offer. I may hit you up on that. I'm sure I will be fine sleeping. I use that pad year round with no issue. Like I said if night time temps will be below 39..I will use my 30 degree quilt, if they are 39 and above, I will bring my 50 degree quilt. I know that this will work for me. I don't think the clothing I listed will be overkill, just looking for some opinions and/or advice. Thanks again..
