There's a passage where he woke up in a farmers field to a bemused tractor driver, and I'm not convinced an American hiker could do that anymore. Worth noting he was also about camping comforts ("lightness of being" was his term for UL iirc, but he also mentioned life at the camp shouldn't be overlooked).
