Hi All,
I am going on a 60 mile hike in eastern Yosemite in July, likely around the Matterhorn Canyon area out of Mono Village. The area is new to me as is hammock camping.
Is this the type of terrain where a hammock is useful? Do I need a fully winterized system to stay warm here?
I have read articles by Alan Dixon implying he has moved more towards hammocks than tents and I know this is his neck of the woods. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks, Steve
I don't think you need a full winter set up for the Sierras. I'm heading to the Continental Divide soon and I'll be taking a 40 degree underquilt. My only top quilt is 20 degrees so that is what I must use. I haven't decided on which tarp yet… I make my own and I will either take a 10'4" by 7'6" tarp or one that is 11'6" x 9'6".
Neither tarp has doors.
Bottom line IMHO is you don't need a winter set up for summer in the Sierras.
Enjoy your trip!
Thanks for the advice. I asked Clark hammocks and they agreed it likely was an area not normally needing winterizing, but I had thought maybe so based on possible cold temps at the higher elevations at night.
Also hope your trip goes well,
Steve
