Hello all, been lurking around for about a year. Just havent done a whole lot of posting. This is my tentative gear list for a thru hike of the AT in 2015 with my wife. Some of the equipment will be shared. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated. Its not super light, but I feel it encompasses everything I'll run into. Well be leaving the second week of April.
Here is the link to the spreadsheet:

Apr 1, 2014 at 10:10 am #2088413I'd skip the expensive sunglasses and go get a cheap pair from walmart or something. AT is called the Green Tunnel for a reason.. you're in the woods a lot and you will not need them so keeping them in the pack isn't ideal for nice Oakleys.
otherwise seems pretty solid. hopefully you've taken at least a weekend test drive with stuff so you've had some practice.
Apr 1, 2014 at 3:31 pm #2088533Thanks for the tip on the sunglasses. It's been quite a few years since I've done any hiking on the AT. We go hiking around here in south mississippi every chance we get. We're doing a section hike of the smokies from fontana damn to Davenport gap in July to really get things shaken down.
Apr 1, 2014 at 3:52 pm #2088538Do you plan on hanging food at all? I didn't see any string or rope for that if so. I would recommend it to avoid the mice. Other than that, looks like you are ready to go.
One thing to think about – You already plan in taking wind pants, maybe give some thought to trading those for true rain pants that weigh close to the same amount. (If i just missed them let me know)….I did an AT section this past weekend and met a couple through hikers who had been walking in the rain for 15 days straight. I normally just walk through it in convertible hiking pants, but 15 days straight would be a bit much. Especially when raining at 45-50F during the day and dropping to 25F at night.
Good luck on your thru!

Apr 1, 2014 at 5:27 pm #2088572Thanks Ryan the bear bag kit that weighs 3 oz includes a rock sack and 50 ft of zline. As far as rain pants go I was really hoping not to have to bring any… Any recomendations?
Apr 1, 2014 at 7:27 pm #2088620I would probably go with Luke's Ultralite Pertex rain pants off the top of my head sub-3oz. I don't have any experience with them however.
