My wife and I use the grand trunk ultra light hammocks and are happy with them but unfortunately they are only rated at 250 pounds. We are looking for something in the 300 pound range so that 'in camp' we can use one as a chair and sit together. We are sub 300 but unless I do some serious dieting we won't ever be under 250.

I know i saw a pic that Brian Green put up of a hammock that he is doing a review on which is rated to 275 and weighs in around 7oz. You might want to keep an eye on his site for when the review comes out.

Have you checked out hennessyhammock.com? They have multiple models rated at 300 lbs (and even one rated at 350). They may appear heavy in the specs, but remember that they include hammock with attached bug net cover and a rainfly.

Hammock Bliss "Ultralight" is rated for 350 pounds. It's almost twice the weight of the Grand Trunk Nano-7 though.

Sitting together might feel a little cramped as you both get squeezed together at the hips in a different way than you do when lying down. I don't think it would be very comfortable, regardless of the fabric and suspension taking the weight.

I've never been able to find a real correlation between hammock design, fabric and suspension to the user weight. The more experienced hammock builders understand the stretch issues which have effect on comfort, as well as safety concerns.

For example, a Grand Trunk Ultralight Travel Hammock (polyester taffeta) is rated at 250 pounds. The Warbonnet Traveler single layer 1.1oz ripstop nylon is rated at 200 pounds. A double layer 1.1oz Traveler is rated at 275, and the double layer 1.7oz version is rated at 400 pounds. The suspension is the same for all the Travelers.

If you sew, it's really easy to make a hammock and you can build it to your specs. IMHO, I wouldn't put any hammock that can truly handle 300+ pounds in the UL column. You might as well haul both the Grand Trunk hammocks you have.
