Here is the ADK's student handbook for their winter mountaineering school. I thought that some here might find it interesting. One bit of context — you can have winter rains at that time of year; you can also have -40F.

I have the '60s print version of this handbook. It's and antique, like me.
This new ADK handbook is right on the money about boot selection for overnight camping.
I've been preaching their REMOVABLE LINER & VBL idea for years here on BPL. I even ruffled some feathers when I disputed a BPL article author's recommendations for winter footwear that did not REQUIRE a VBL and never mentioned removable liners for overnighters. The perfect companion to the ADK winter camping handbook is "Allen & Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Skiing Book".
BTW, I liked this handbook so much that I printed it out – double sided of course. I'll have it bound at Office Max.

Seeing your location, I suggest looking up their winter mountaineering school. Probably too late for this year, but if you could go you would find it one of the best ways to get introduced to the High Peaks in the winter.

Yes, it would be an excellent way to learn the necessary skills. Classes are open now for 2014. A little too rich for my blood, though.Dec 13, 2013 at 6:30 pm #2054093I understand. I have not looked up their current prices but last I knew it was not cheap — not even if you tent out instead of staying in the Loj. That's too bad because the experience itself is excellent.
Looking at the manual was interesting for me — it implies that they are doing some things differently than when I was last involved. There were a few things in there that I wondered about, such as hanging around in the cold cooking supper.
