We tried ultralight (13 lb) backpacking for few years and it was nice but we eventually gravitated back to some gear we missed. We section-hiked the Applachain Trail and for a 3-5 day A.T. our pack weights were 35-45 lb. each. Now its 18-20 lb. We lost 10.5 lb just changing the tent, pack and sleeping bag. The other major reduction was stove and clothing. [We never compromise food or water.] I made a lot of our gear, i.e. tent for two – 31 oz., stuff sacks, pack covers, Pepsi can stove, sofsacks & etc. Bogey and I share gear. Bogey carries the stove and I carry 1st aid in the ditty bag.
