Hello friends,
My son's scout troop is planning our trip to Philmont in 2014, and we are seeking a house/time share/ or some place to accommodate 12 boys/4 adults around the Woodland Park area of Colorado Springs (7/12 thru 7/17).
The plan is to simply allow for the boys to acclimate to the higher elevations before heading into Philmont, so we are planning some various day trips.
Any ideas are welcome, esp. on accomodations. You are welcome to PM me off-line if you wish.
Thank you,
Matt

Aug 21, 2013 at 1:02 pm #2017351Rampart Reservoir may be an option, however, due to the Waldo Canyon fire last summer, much of the area is still closed. Here's the latest from the Forest Service… http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/psicc/news-events/?cid=STELPRDB5421184
Depending on dates, a good option would be to camp at one of our Council's properties, Glen Aspen Ranch. This is available by reservation for a nominal fee ($3/pp/weekend out of council). It isn't a very large tract of property (200 acres) but has plenty of national forest very close with easy access to Woodland Park. Also at 9100 feet it will help acclimate your crew. If you need to be there during the week, we can discuss if a campmaster can be arranged to open the property. Here's a link to the council website, http://www.pikespeakbsa.org/Camping/GlenAspen/.
Other options…
>Camp in the Pike National Forest (primitive and free)
>Tarryall Wilderness (~45 minutes from Woodland Park)
>B-52 Campground on USAFA (Colorado Springs)
>Crag's Campground on the backside of Pikes Peak (~30 minutes west of Woodland Park)PM if you want more information on how to schedule, facilities, trails, etc.
Another option that may work is to rent a cabin at the USAFA Farish Recreation Area. It's located at 9k' between Woodland Park and the USAFA. Available to anyone with a military association (Active/Retired Mil, DoD Civ, retired DoD Civ). More info at http://www.usafasupport.com/the-great-outdoors/farish
