Found this navigable map website for public information on wildfire burn areas on esri.com, a major GIS (geographical information systems) company (current 7/30/2013) It loads without GIS software (no ESRI, no Google Earth – I opened in Mac's Safari) and you can probably bounce off major landmarks to see specifically where the burn areas may impact your future hiking plans until the area's vegetation regrows.

These maps uploaded to BPL below are small but you can zoom, expand, and pan to your hearts content on the website itself, capture it to the desired sizes, etc..

Remembering the threads from a month ago, here is the shape (scale below left) of the current area of the Pecos wilderness and nearby NF, plus the Jemez currently burning in 2013

Zooming in one can see the shape of the burn and make general plans accordingly once the forest reopens

I use two other resources –

Active Fire Map will provide information on a fires size, growth, estimated containment, etc. Just click on the numbers on the map.

    LargeFireMap
This map is updated by 8 am MT, or earlier.

Infrared Mapping for ground details. Google Earth is required though. Click on Download, Google Earth will start, and the NIROPS overlays will appear. You can see the current active front, as well as the progress over the past 6 days. Zoom in tight to get the date of the last IR imaging.

The names for the fires are consistent. "Thompson Ridge" on the Fire Map will be "Thompson Ridge" on the NIROPS map.

    NIROPS
This is updated by priority request, but can be several days old if the fire slows down.
