Just returned from a technical trip to the Catalinas and hiked a portion of the TransCatalina Trail from below Little Harbor to Two Harbor (had electronics and a paid for room, so no camping). So thinking about the right season and doing the 50-miles or so in two directions, with side trips for about 100 miles. Just some observations from the small part of the trail done since water is an issue plus catching a ferry:
Closing in on the isthmus, one can look across the island and see Los Angeles beach communities (probably San Pedro) in as background shadows. It's dry up here though.
Trail merges with Banning Road, which becomes a trail itself (no cars, ATV, etc..) The distinction between trail and road was unclear as maps are not updated (in my opinion) at present time. Some work needed sometimes and again there's no water on the trails
Overlooking the Pacific, so it is worth the planning and expense
There's a beach and a water spigot at Little Harbor, so any overnight camp would be around the campsite (though not necessarily in it due to $$$)
These are paying car-campgrounds as guests pay for a limited number of RVs or whatever, though I met a family camping higher up in the desert, then picnicking down here and watering up before proceeding. Nice beach …a little cold going in but not bad afterwards.
Admittedly more campgrounds are open for sea kayaking but the trail intrigues me as a winter destination (seems they are going to have some drought in the backcountry – the main town of Avalon has a desalinization plant reportedly). My ferry was paid for this time but for a vacation this would be on my dime. After that I'm thinking some long days on the trail and some layover days in Two Harbors and finally Avalon. Thoughts?
