At Modern Mountain Man. Not a bad deal at all.

Mar 27, 2007 at 7:51 am #1383690Forgot to add that there's free shipping too.
Mar 27, 2007 at 9:20 am #1383707Thanks! I may actually pick one up…
Mar 27, 2007 at 12:14 pm #1383725bummer, I knew if was too good to be true, they're already out of most sizes.
Mar 27, 2007 at 12:20 pm #1383727Sorry, they had all sizes and colors available this morning when I bought mine and posted this up. Didn't think they'd go that fast. There's still Large and Medium left though.
Mar 27, 2007 at 2:06 pm #1383745No problem, I just wish I would have seen it earlier. The problem is the website would list them, but when you went to put it in the shopping cart, it wouldn't go through. I called them on the phone and they checked and were running out fast. Only mediums left now.
Mar 27, 2007 at 3:26 pm #1383760Hey, thanks for posting this. I don't need a new jacket right now but I often buy stuff like this when it's a great deal as a pending replacement for a piece of gear I cherish but know won't last forever. In this case it's my Montbell UL Down Inner Jacket… LOVE it… but if I can put some wear and tear on another jacket on hikes where the weight savings is less critical than PERFECT. So needless to say I scooped this deal up and thanks again for posting it. Haha, in my avatar photo I am wearing the Montbell UL Down Inner Jacket… a real favorite of mine.
Mar 27, 2007 at 5:29 pm #1383773Guys, I can get them here in Japan every day at that price. The catch is shipping will be $12 to the US. And paypal will charge 2% more. Total cost about $114 to your door. PM me if you want one. Can't guarantee your choice of color though this late in the season.
Also, any other item at cost, plus a few bucks for my train ride packed between office ladies :)
http://www.montbell.comMar 27, 2007 at 5:48 pm #1383779You need to stop sneaking into those ladies only trains! One of these days, you'll get caught and embarrass America!
Mar 27, 2007 at 6:20 pm #1383786..how did you know about those?!? I just claim I can't read the big pink signs on the ground and windows of those cars.. "I thought there was a hairdressers convention in town or something.. SORRY!"
Mar 27, 2007 at 7:09 pm #1383797Tokyo Police questioning Brett: "so color blind aside, you say this sign is hard to understand"?
Mar 27, 2007 at 7:34 pm #1383799In my town, they really are pink, and I thought the kanji above "women only" meant "ultralight backpackers AND.."
Mar 27, 2007 at 10:00 pm #1383824Sure, Brett, you honestly misread the kanji — whatever happens, please tell the police you're Canadian… :)
Mar 27, 2007 at 10:18 pm #1383830Really made me laugh to read this exchange! My story is from the first day of the first train to start using the ladies only cars, back in 2003. I was coming home very late from work one night, and just managed to catch the last train of the Keio line. I ran down the stairs from the ticket gate, saw that the last car was nearly empty, and jumped right on… only to be confronted by a woman, who curiously had a microphone in her hand, and promptly shoved me out the door of the car. Incensed I turned to shout at her and found myself face-to-face with a television camera, Fuji Television, no less. The woman was reporter! With my face filling the camera lens all twisted with rage, the reporter burbled in Japanese into the microphone, "Ah, yes. This is how we can expect the average male passenger to react to this new development in the fight against sexual harrassment. Quite a firghtening visage, wouldn't you say?" So far, I hadn't spoken a word or understood what wsa going on, but a moment looking around me made me realize I had stepped onto one of the new Ladies Only cars. The next evening, in my English class my female students kidded with me, "My, teacher, you certainly can get very angry! We didn't know! You always seem so nice here in the class!"
From speaking to my women friends, however, many of them really don't like riding the women only cars.
By the way, for anyone out there who'd like MontBell or other Japanese goods, you can ask me, too. Poor Brett with those mounds of MontBell packages!
Mar 27, 2007 at 11:19 pm #1383833Great story Miguel! Truth is always more entertaining than my fictional exchange with Ben. Your bad luck was to encounter what seemed like a feminist reporter. I am glad to hear the girls don't like those cars so much either; and my commuter line doesn't use them.
I better end this before we digress to far from LW packing..Mar 28, 2007 at 7:49 am #1383847Funny!!! Miguel has managed to reinforce — yet again — the Japanese fear and distrust of foreigners. There's a monster inside every one of them!
Mar 28, 2007 at 2:14 pm #1383894Great pics – eye-opening since I would not have guessed that there was sufficient gender discrimination in Japan to warrant separate cars supposedly to protect women. Whaddayaknow!
'Nother question: This jacket is really worth a hundred dollars? Apparently to some of us. Yeah, UL and well-made is good. But I have trouble parting with that much although the remaining mediums would be a good fit. Hmmmm.
Mar 28, 2007 at 3:30 pm #1383902Mandy (formerly Mary):
For me, I would look at it two ways:
1. The piece itself — is it well made and all? I own two Thermawraps, and I would say the answer is "yes".
2. Does it fit your needs good enough to shell out the cash? If you have an insulaion layer that's good to 40F and you're happy with your pack weight and it isn't bulging at the seams, then I would say you don't have a need for another insulation layer — esp. one that's fairly expensive. But on the other hand, say your insulation layer is a heavy fleece jacket that's pretty darn bulky and eats into your pack space more than you like… then the Thermawrap can be a great substitution piece.
Mar 28, 2007 at 5:02 pm #1383919Mandy, it's a GREAT jacket. i loooove mine. i'll never carry a fleece again (for those times when my puffy down jacket would be overkill). but you are the only one who can determine if it is worth 100 clams. good luck!
Mar 28, 2007 at 5:39 pm #1383926To some people its worth $140! (retail) So it makes it that much sweeter….well, to me at least. But I just love a deal.
Mar 28, 2007 at 8:29 pm #1383954I have the down version of this jacket (UL Down Inner Jacket) and it's easily one of the most used pieces of gear in my pack. I bought the Thermawrap at this sale price because of this. It's really a versatile garment. In addition to a very warm and snug layer (works well under a Driducks coat) I have found it makes an amazing pillow to sleep on. Also, if I wrap it around my neck at night… sort of use it to fill in the loose spots between me and my sleeping bag around my neck… that it acts like a draft collar and I can snuggle down on nights where I am pushing the limit of my sleep system.
