Made with 0.5 oz RSBTR noseeum

I always carry a headnet to protect against swarms of gnats as much as mosquitos. I’ve been caught out to where you would literally go crazy with the little buggers flying into your nose, eyes, ears and mouth without a head net. The nets you buy are larger diameter at the bottom than on top with a draw string closure, but I found that by keeping the diameter the same on the bottom as the top there’s hardly any space for bugs to enter so no need for a drawcord. I give up a little space around the face, yet it’s not bad. If I knew I was going into heavy mosquito country for days I’d pack my 24 gram S2S net instead, however for most trips this 0.5 RSBTR noseeum headnet is adequate and it lets me shed 17 grams.

Very simple to make. I just cut out a 29″ X 18″ rectangle of the 0.5 noseeum and do a simple 1/4″ fold and sew. Then I sew on a 9 5/8″ diameter circle of .65 noseeum to the top and viola you have a headnet that’s ridiculously light. I also made a 7D stuffsack with 1/16″ shockcord closure for the net (1 gram)

It’s hard to tell for sure, but is it touching your face on the forehead and cheeks?  If so, that would earn me lots of bites.

Monte, are you familiar with Peter’s Headnet? I think it is a near-perfect design. I think it’s made with tulle and it has an elastic band up high and down low. It blouses away from your face, nearly invisible and has much more airflow than traditional headnets. 12g.

I can take photos of it on gridded paper sometime if you are interested.

I always wear a visor cap when awake so that takes care of the forehead. But yes, the netting does touch the cheeks and a mosquito could possibly bite through, however I would never sleep in this headnet and rely on it for overnight protection. I have numerous MYOG bug nets I always carry. If I was relying on a headnet for stand alone protection I’d go with a bigger one for sure. This is for when lower mosquito pressure is expected or emergency situations. As stated earlier, gnats are the bigger concern for me and it does fine for that, and when sitting around camp to ward off mosquitos.  A 17 gram weight reduction might not seem worth it for many hikers, but when you’re an SUL nut-job like me with 2 knee surgeries, shedding 0.6 oz is a big deal.

Yea Matthew, pics of the Peter’s headnet would be great. Does it also protect against nosseums/midges? Often times the tulle doesn’t have enough holes per square inch.

Once I was eating breakfast.  About the worst bugs I’ve experienced.  Peter’s head net which is sort of invisible.  I had to have it on every second or I’d get eaten.

I forgot I was wearing the net and put a spoonful of oatmeal into my mouth, but the head net was in the way.  It went all over.  I laughed hilariously.
