Hey there,
I'm looking for suggestions for a break I've got coming up.
We like long hiking days (20+ miles) and are interested in seeing something new.
First thoughts were wonderland trail in about 4-6 days. Having been on Mt Rainier, I am a bit sketched on the weather out in those parts. We've seen a lot of Utah (current location) and a lot of the Sierra. I really want to hike the JMT but I don't want to be so pressed for time. Other areas worth considering? What are some nice loops in Wyoming or Idaho? Northern Cali? Oregon? Colorado? Montana?
100-120ish miles is preferable. We are adventurous and well versed in cross country travel, climbing, canyoneering, etc.
Thanks a whole bunch.
Mike
How about the Crest of the Wind River Range? Aprx 100 miles.
Hi Mike,
Since you said you are interested in the JMT, I wonder whether you considered doing half the trail. You could start at either VVR (Vermillion Valley Resort) or MTR (Muir Trail Ranch). That way you would see Evolution Valley, Rae Lakes and Mt. Whitney (and many more highlights of the JMT) within a 100-120 mile hike.
Since you also mentioned that you are adventurous and well versed in cross-country travel and climbing you might consider the Sierra High Route and go from Kings Canyon to Reds Meadow (Mammoth).
Enjoy your trip,
Manfred
Ok nice, didn't know about that Wind River route, excellent. Will do research.
I've seen all of the JMT south of Rae Lakes. Everything north is intriguing. Been on a lot of Sierra peaks, but haven't done much research about the high route. Will check it out.
Mike,
You can of course also go north on the JMT from MTR and end your hike in Yosemite (may be include Half Dome).
Best Regards,
Manfred
Hey thanks to the recommendation of the Wind River Crest. We start our hike this Sunday. Base weight is heavy for me ~10lbs bleh, but we have a tarptent, neoair, and other luxury items. I'll post a report when we get back.
