Flying with Bear Canister – carry on?

I'm borrowing a bearikade from work and will be flying with it out west. If I pack it in my checked back I imagine I should leave the top off, however I'm wondering if its more prone to damage that way. Has anyone brought one in their carry on? I'm just trying to avoid any hassles at the airport.
