The Smartwool turtleneck mid-weight merino wool was worn next to my skin for several days in 5-15 degF weather. The merino wool outperformed my Capilene base layers hands down in moisture management, which added to the total warmth factor. Managing layers while hiking was made easier as a result. The turtle neck comes with a zipper that lets you unzip down below the chest, which is a nice feature when it does happen to warm up a little and you need to exhaust some heat and moisture.

Sorry guys – hit the wrong button. Meant to ask Ron a question about this shirt and ended up in the wrong spot. Couldn't back out of the screen

Thanks for the information Ron. Do you think the midweight turtle neck would be warm enough as an insulating layer for summertime mountain hikes, combined with a merino wool micro or light base layer, and under a wind shirt?
