May or June in the pines

My wife and I are looking the get away in May or June. We'd like to backpack and camp in pine forests. Where would be nice that time of year? we'd like to be as close to Iowa as we can yet be somewhere lovely. Oh, we also want to be someplace warm that time of year. Any suggestions please????
