My first MYOG Hammock!!!

Hello invisible internet friends! Yesterday I finished my first hammock, and I thought I'd share some pictures! I was gonna go through but construction process, but it's basically (no, exactly) a rectangle with seamed edges.

Anyway…

Here's my finished hammock, the fabric was purchased at a Joann Etc. (a fabric store), it's definitely ripstop, but I have a couple yards of 1.1oz from DIYGS and this stuff is a lot heavier and thicker than that. I figured I use the high quality stuff once I had figured out what I was doing.

A picture of my seams at their straightest. My thread injector doesn't assist with this so there are some serious waves in my seams but I double stitched everything so hopefully it will hold.

My hammock hanging. There are no good trees to hang on in the near vicinity of my house, so I'm hanging on the porch! The suspension is from my Amazonas Easy Traveller Hammock. The cord is unnecessarily thick, and I'll be trading it out for some serious suspension at a later date.

And finally, ME!! Hey everyone!! Me in my handmade hammock! I don't have a weight yet as I don't have a scale yet but I'll be bringing it to work with me and I'll have the weight for ya'll when I get back. Now it's time to start working with my 1.1oz. Who's excited? I am!

I just finished my 1.1 Ripstop Hammock myself and it is such a sense of accomplishment so I know just how you feel! The hammock looks great to me and your stitches are actually pretty good. If you want them straighter, the foot can actually help and it's really easy with something that has lines running through it, like nylon.

You can set it up so that one of the "lines" of the nylon is centered in the middle of the foot and just always make sure that is what is going between the two kicked up sides of the foot. It makes for a pretty darn straight stitch, but I've been sewing since I was a kid and you did just as good as I can do. Can't wait to see the pictures of the 1.1 version!!

Thanks! with the current (heavy) suspension it weighs exactly 16oz, which is pretty awesome considering the Amazonas Hammock weighs 15 oz with the same suspension and is a much lighter fabric (I think I used less fabric). I had considered using even less than I did, but after trying it out, I don't think I could comfortably go smaller than this with my height (6ft). It was 121" before hemming so it's probably 115"-118" now (I had to even out the edges before seams).

I'm glad you like it and I'm stoked to start the next one. Soon I'll start experiments with built in bug netting then making my own tarps and underquilts. Ha, I feel like this has opened up a dangerous door of creation!

I think you'll be really happy with the weight of the 1.1, I know I was. I made an almost exact copy of the GT Ultralight Hammock and I love that it weighs pretty much the same, 7oz give or take. I think you'll find your finished 1.1oz hammock will weight less than 10oz without suspension.
