    Locale: Great Smoky Mountains

I'd never seen any of Montbell's products in person. My local outfitter carries Western Mountaineering products, but I never had any luck getting a Flight Jacket there and the thought of paying over $200 dollars for a jacket on a college student's budget made me opt for a more wallet friendly choice. At $150, I found this jacket to be a great bargain. I took a chance on a product from a company I'd never had any experience with and it paid off. The jacket weighs 11.3 ounces (as per Montbell's website) and comes with its own stuffsack. This isn't as light as Western's Flight Jacket, but not too much heavier for a similar product. It also has a lower quality down (725) although the newer Montbell jackets have graduated to 800 fill. There are only a few small gripes about the jacket. The first is that some of the seams around the pockets have already had threads that need trimming. Nothing major, and it doesn't make me question the durability of the jacket. Secondly, the length could be longer, because when I sit down, it does not cover your back well enough and you can feel the cold. Everything else appears to be working great! I love the jacket and loved the price compared to some of the other leading down apparel makers. The cuffs and waist are simple elastic and work fine. I have had no trouble with the zipper getting caught. I would recommend it to someone as a cheaper alternative to the Flight Jacket, but if you have the money, go for the Flight.
