What a beautiful feeling to walk in the Stegers (I got the Arctic model and I got my partner the beautiful Navajo).

She was really leary of them because the soles seemed really soft, like they would not last and they were pricey. So we asked for some help from other BPL members and got it. With that encouragement we started testing them (trying not to get them dirty so we could return them if we didn't like them).

So first I wore mine around the outside of the house, in the snow, and then we took the dogs down to the creek to walk around. (According to the advice we received from BPL members who know the product use it for dog sledding and generally know their stuff, they will last a long time if they are used in snow — they have a soft flexible sole, so it is not good for downtown shopping and street walking.) Voila, my feet were not only warm they were really comfortable. The key is the soft sole lets them move, there is no tight fitting toe area compression or overall tight fighting around the foot so heat builds up from walking inside the mukluk — I would have never believed it or believed how much heat builds up until I got the nerve to try it based on the other members advice and encouragement about the product. It is a great product.

So when we took the dogs to the creek my partner was wearing her normal leather boots. Tight fitting and merino wool socks like we normally wear. Her feet got cold.

Mine got warmer and not uncomfortable but really very comfortable the more we walked. And, with the mukluk soles you don't really need snow shoes to go through snow up to 6 or 8" powdery.

So she decided to try hers on and we just got back from walking around Manzanita Lake at the base of Mt. Lassen.

Never experienced that much comfort, warmth, pure fun at walking in the snow. You feel like your in your element with these mukluks. Wish I could try the other brand that was recommended, but my partner will have me on death row if I dare to order another pair (think I gotta wait till next year to try those.)

Highly recommend them — its a whole new experience of trekking and walking in snow. WOW!

The Arctic is a thicker soled mukluk with natural/white canvas upper ($160) and the Navajo is a thinner soft soled mukluk with a wool blanket, beautiful colors and pattern, for the uppers ($230). They are both warm. There is a moosehide tie thing at the top of the upper, just under the knee and two long ties that run from the ankle up around the lower leg to hold the upper in place. They feel great. Pricey, but we are going to now be able to just take of walking for exercise in the snow without the hassle of snow shoes or Xcountry skies — or the heavy, inflexible type regular hiking boots which just sink right down in the snow and are not in any way as comfortable as the Stegers mukluks. Arctics weigh 2.5 lbs. a pair.
