Update: Just checked out the Mountain House web site (actually EpiCenter company) — they have #10 cans of stuff that is packed to last 30 years, ugghh, but the cans contain a lot of servings which very significantly reduces the individual serving prices.
The Mountain House freeze dried is the first I ever tried. It is still my favorite, I guess. Easy to use, solid package (I almost always forget to take out the silica gel bag or whatever the lethal looking thing is).
The package has a lot of other uses once it has been used and washed. (I use it for a back up hot water container, mixing bowl, cooking pot, bowl for eating out of, stuff sack for cooking pot, windshield … probly'd use if for a hat if I could).
As someone else in another review mentioned, salt in all the prepackaged stuff is pretty high … but then at home I eat worse a lotta times — and some of the crazed members in this community are discussing Pringles as a hiking staple on another thread (gotta admit I'm goin for that idea).
The frozen corn is great and makes a great addition to the stew. One small package is enough for both my partner and I along with the Chicken Stew 'entree' — how weird is that … gourmet food terms used to describe UL or nearly so camping cuisine? Maybe Emeril or Jaques Peppin can create some recipes just for BPL members. Pretty soon I'll be asking questions like which freeze dried and then reconstituted wines go with which main course or desserts.
Because of the quality of the meal once prepared, the durability of the packaging, and great favor they did for me in producing this stuff I give it a 5. The cooking pouch alone deserves it.
