For a first shot, “Here’s why you should consider lightweight backpacking” book, this one is pretty good. It’s not too long, about 60 pages, and gives a lot of hints to someone considering going lightweight as to the what where why how and howmuch questions. If you read bpl.com, this is all a review of the very basics, but if you’ve never thought about why it might be nice to carry something less than a 50 – 70 lb ruck, this is an excellent, and very easy read primer.

If you know someone who might be interested in , or ought to be interested in lightweight, then this would be a good starting point.

I would give this a 5, but the camera and gps sections need to be revised, and a little beefier section on first aid would be recommended.

When I 1st joined BL.com this was the article that convinced me sub 5 was possible. I think that on the home page there should be a link that says read this first. While the original might use some updating, it is a solid first read for newbies to UL backpacking.
