The Atmos 50 looks like a pretty sweet back at 3#. Anyone use it? From the pictures it looks like the side compression straps go over the side water bottle pockets. Do they? Does it cause a problem? Can you fit a bear can in the main pack? Is it easy getting to the side pockets while hiking?
Just picked up an Osprey Atmos 50. Very nice. So comfy, and going to be soooo nice to not get SBS (sweaty back syndrome) any more!
The thing is though it’s going to be a learning experience to pack it since its so weird inside. Does anybody have any tips?
I haven’t had a problem with the side pockets since I would rarely use the compression straps on a smallish pack like this.
Atmos questions for Ken Knight:
Thanks for the great review, Ken!
Did you concur with any of the criticisms given by Backpacker magazine in the June issue?
When you mentioned the hipbelt getting uncomfortable above 25 lbs, do you mean 25 lbs on the hipbelt or 15 lbs as in the case of 60/40 loading? I’ve loaded to 16 lbs today and notice some discomfort at 100% on the belt.
Did you find the bottom part of the frame wrapped around a little too close to the hips?
Did you find the hipbelt pockets to be very useful? My experience is that they seem reasonably large when the pack not being worn, but once the belt is tightened up then the pockets become very shallow and the access is quite difficult – not much room for more than a little snack back or a couple of Clif bars in each one. All but the smallest of digital cameras would be a tight fit for sure, and possibly uncomfortable too.
