Saw a discussion on another forum and I am considering trying a lightweight one out. Wondering how you guys and gals feel about them? Usually get better responses with more insight here.
Feb 8, 2011 at 4:04 pm #1694174I use them for three-season day hikes. Bonus: easy to put on / take off wind jacket when wearing a lumbar pack instead of a full backpack. If you can fit everything you need inside one and if it carries well — then why not?
Feb 8, 2011 at 4:11 pm #1694177I have two backpacks that each weigh less than half of my favorite lumbar pack, meaning that it is more substantial and not lightweight. So far I have not found any lightweight lumbar pack that is durable and comfortable enough.
About three times per year, I do a long dayhike (>20 miles) where I have to jam a lot of stuff into the lumbar pack. The thin ones seem to fall apart after one trip.

Feb 8, 2011 at 4:29 pm #1694185who'll be the first to make the dyneema gridstop fanny pack =) I'd like one that could be used instea of a removable hipbelt (ie thread into a pack) and be big enough to fit a small SLR.
oh yeah, also, I don't use one, because the thrift store at my parents house ones are too small for my SLR and I'm to cheap to buy a new fancy one.

Feb 8, 2011 at 5:07 pm #1694215I have an older Dana lumbar pack (~ 15 liters) that I use for hunting- nice to have my arms free. It has a "beavertail" flap on it that allows me to carry an additional jacket, the volume is just about right for a long day out
it carries very nicely and I've put a lot of miles on it :)
Kifaru is evidently coming up w/ a lightweight version of their Scout pack- it utilizes a belt and shoulder straps, volume is ~ 22 liters
Feb 8, 2011 at 6:52 pm #1694285When I was in China for a year I used two bags every day. A Tamrac Velocity 7 sling bag for my camera, and a fake North Face fanny pack with one central water bottle holder two zip pockets and one long zippered major compartment. This was worn as a sling bag-not as a fanny pack. So one is slung to my left , one to my right. Weird ? Not really. Theft is a big deal . So going through the train station both bags are slung to the front and I'm holding them. In secure areas both are slung behind me. If its hot I vary the position every 15 minutes so that sweat doesn't build up. . I'd do it again today but probably need much less camera bag if any since my Canon fits in a pocket. But slinging and moving the bag make sense. Ray Jardine says the same thing about his pack. Worn on one shoulder quite a bit to stop the sweat.
