This is the best headlamp I have used for backpacking… ever.

It's light 1.2oz (3.5oz with battery and headband) headlamp that runs on a single AA batteries. It has 6 light levels from with good quality regulation (lumens/time: 0.2/19 days, 2.5/3 days, 8/39h , 30/12h, 100/2h, 200/55min) The beam has a hot spot with enough throw for way finding and enough spill to be useful for around the camp. The headband is comfortable and removable. The glow in the dark holder makes it easy to find at night. The only thing this light is missing is a battery life indicator. For people who prefer CR123 batteries, the Zebralight H31 looks equally interesting.

The only thing I wouldn't recommend this headlamp for would be extended winter trips where you really want a remote battery pack for the extra power capacity and to keep the batteries warm.

I have used the ZebraLight H51 for 2 yrs and must say I don't think I will ever even look at anything else. The current model is the H52. The ZebraLight only takes one AA battery and can be changed with one hand — literally. Before the H51 I dropped a AAA in the dark and almost never got my light working again because I couldn't see which way the batteries went. In 2 yrs I just changed the batter last month. I wear glasses, so when I wake up in my tent I can find the lamp with the glow-in-the-dark clip without putting on my glasses. When you don't need much light you can put it on the lowest setting and the light would stay on for weeks, continuously. It's a little pricey, but well worth the $$.
