I can find lots of 60-yd rolls of 3M 9485PC (This looks like the cheapest option at $50) but does anyone know where to find smaller rolls (20-30 yds)? Alternatively, is anyone with a large roll willing to sell me 20-30 yards of tape?

I don’t know the answers to your questions, but I would guess if you could find a smaller role it would be much smaller than what you are looking for (10-20 foot range) making it cost the same or more for the half roll you are looking for.  Since you need half the roll, your best bet is to buy it and try to sell the second half on gear swap.

That is the best price.  get it, you’ll use it up quick!  I’ve made a tent, backpack, jacket… no sewing just tape!  It works!

How does one unrollll 20 to 30 yd of tape to sell to somebody else? Wrap it up on something else and make sure it’s centered as you wrap it? I wouldn’t buy tape that was unwrapped off the main role.

It can be done, IF you have a specialised winding machine. Two spindles and large flanges and a brake on the source spindle.

I agree with LesW. Just buy a reel. I have bought several reels over the years. Unlike so many other adhesives, this one is PERMANENT. In one case I stripped the PU coating off the nylon fabric with it – an oops moment!

    Cheers

Thanks for the advice, I think I will just go ahead and buy a full roll. It will give me an excuse to start experimenting more with bonding PU-coated fabrics

Are you all using this to tape Cuben/DCF? Or PU-coated nylons?

Most older posts seem related to Cuben…does it also work on Sil-PU coatings?

I’m interested in using it for both DCF and PU-coated nylon. From going through old forum posts, my understanding is that it works well on both fabrics (but not Silicone-coated fabrics) though it will lose most of its strength under stress at cold temps. I did come across a comment from Ron Bell a couple years ago saying that there’s a better bonding technique for DCF than 3M tape so I would be curious to hear anyone’s thoughts on that

I was under the impression that the 9460 was the better performing tape for these applications. And the 2mil version rather than the 5mm as the adhesion seems the same but thinner/easier to work with? https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/question-double-sided-bonding-tape-for-cuben/ has a few people making note. There is also a thread over on hammockf going 11+ pages deep that has some good test info. I know 9485 does work, though.

I also came to the conclusion that rshughes was the best bet to buy both the 1/2in and 1in rolls.

I would think it is better to use the first half and sell the second half that is still on the roll.
