Hey all, hoping you can help me out….I'm looking for fuel sources or comparable fuels for 2 stoves I brought with me to NZ.
1) The much BPL-dreaded MSR XGR for 'car camping' (ute camping actually). I know I can use diesel and kero…but don't have gusto to use pump gas. Do they have White gas/coleman fuel here?
2) My pepsi can stove…so far all i've found is isopropyl alcohol…and people are dumb-founded we have to use gas line anti-freeze at home! Any Kiwi's have suggestions?
Thanks in advance…
Nov 30, 2010 at 11:43 pm #1669623Methylated spirits is what I use for my pop can stove. It's purple and widely available in hardware stores and supermarkets etc.
http://tramper.co.nz/?view=topic&id=292 tals about coleman fuel etc.
Dec 1, 2010 at 12:15 am #1669626I'm not sure if you really mean MSR XGR stove. I'm not aware of that model.
The MSR XGK has been around in several variations for about thirty years, and it will burn just about anything, including unleaded auto fuel. You might want to avoid the fumes, and it is not exactly the safest fuel in the world, but the stove will burn it fine.
Sometimes white gas is called Coleman Fuel, and it is about the most foolproof to use, if you can find it.

FrancoDec 1, 2010 at 1:32 am #1669635yes, sorry about the model…but same stove
and many thanks for the tip on 'shellite!' just what i needed
Dec 1, 2010 at 1:57 pm #1669862i'll let you know what i find..
one thing i'm disappointed i'm not seeing is cheap, lightweight water bottles (although kudos for less waste!). I left my small 8 fl. oz poland springs water bottle back in the US thinking it'd be no problem finding something comparable here…
any suggestions on fuel bottles?

How about the container that it is sold in?
If it is not sold in the container, then the place that sells it may sell a container.
I used to fly to some other country with new empty Sigg bottles in my gear. Then I would purchase white gas from a bulk drum at a hardware store.

Dec 1, 2010 at 2:37 pm #1669875Shellite is sold in lightweight plastic bottles already.
500ml/1 L …
Note : it's a generic product not a brand name (now…)

I'm not sure I understand this…NZ has as many disposable plastic water bottles as anywhere I've been. It really annoys me here in Christchurch when the water coming out of the tap is probably cleaner than the stuff in the bottles, and certainly less wasteful!!! But as Franco points out, both Shellite and Methylated spirits come in their own plastic bottles with leak-proof (kiddy-proof) lids.
Dec 1, 2010 at 5:11 pm #1669950Some very interesting insight here…I had just presumed the white gas would come in metal containers like the US, not convenient plastic! Nor would I have expected it to possibly be available from a drum…these folks really have it figured out…hopefully i can hitch a ride to the hardware store this afternoon…how exciting…
to the comment about the water bottles…so far I really haven't seen the multitude i'm used to seeing back in the states…and as I said, that's a good thing for the earth…I've seen various juice containers, but basically none of the small super thin plastic screw top or squeeze top spring water bottles.
recycling day is on friday..so i may go scavenging…
Dec 2, 2010 at 3:20 pm #1670222At most hardware stores such as Mitre 10, Bunnings, Placemakers etc, have Fuelite in 1 litre plastic containers. Colemans Fuel is available at outdoor shops but is more expensive.
Virtually every supermarket has "Meths" or Methylated Spirit. It has a very high percentage of industrial ethanol with a certain amount of methanol and purple colour and odorant.
Dec 2, 2010 at 3:52 pm #1670230Just for reference.
Fuelite is the same stuff as Shellite. Also called Pegasol,Britolite and Calite

Yes, it is helpful to know it's purple when shopping for it, otherwise it is easily missed. And sadly the odorant makes it stink quite badly (IMHO).
Dec 2, 2010 at 8:22 pm #1670332Not to keep dragging this out, but I figured for posterity in case others end up searching for this (stove Fuel in New Zealand):
Thanks to everyone! I'm up and running.
Also, at Saveway I found some ramen type noodles which fit exactly, and I mean Exactly the size of my evernew 900ml pot!
