Einstein X asked about my October “Crazy Light Trip” on a different thread.
I have been working on several different gear lists.
1. Sub 2-lb.
2. Sub 3-lb.
3. Sub 4-lb.
4. Sub 5-lb.The difference between the four lists is mainly do to the weather/temperature range expected.
When I travel up to GA I will carry the gear for each of the different weigh levels. I will decide when I get there which gear list will best support my hike/life. I will try the lightest weight gear list that will keep me OK. I will do two hikes. More of that is written below to respond to Einstein’s question.
I will be staying very near the AT and may have as much as 4 or 5 days before the 2 hikes take place. I will have a chance to do a few, 1 or 2 over-night, hikes to check out my gear and see what I need to stay warm/dry etc. Then I will pick my gear and do a 40 mile solo hike with as light a gear list as the weather will allow.
The 40 mile Hike will include some of the best – to hate – trail many AT hikers do just get to Springer Mtn then North to Neels Gap.

ÂBill,
I’ve been reading with interest your threads on the kilt and now this one about your Quilt.
I checked the trip anouncement site, but there is now post about your ‘crazy light’ trip, which i assume is the same as your trip in october. I wonder what you’re planning to take as shelter on this trip. We already know you’ll hike in and sleep on your kilt, you’ll sleep under the quilt, but what about shelter, backpack and cooking options are you thinking of to go sub 3 or sub 2 lbs?
Thanx, Eins
==========Hi Eins.
I have been working on gear lists for the sub 2 – lb, sub 3 – lb, sub 4 – lb and sub 5 – lb range. Needless to say we are not talking about very much gear for the sub 2 or sub 3 – lb list. The weather I might run into is the big factor. the Weather in October for Georgia along the AT should be mild but I expect it may be to cool for a sub-2 lb gear list.
To get into the sub – 2 lb weigh level I would use a small (Cuben) Poncho/Tarp along with my new Kilt/Air Pad and my new 7 oz PG-Delta Quilt. The weather may require me to bump up to a sub 3 – lb, sub 4 – lb or sub 5 – lb gear list. I will take the necessary gear for all weight levels with me to GA. I will be doing two hikes. One Sub ?? will be about 40 miles over maybe 3 days and I expect that one to be a solo hike. The other hike will be 80 miles, w/side trips, or so and I will be doing it with at least one other person. The second hike will be using my new hammock. Since I will not know enough what the weather will be like till I get up there I can’t say yet what the weight of that gear list might be. It will be as light as I can go using the hammock and the necessary stuff to stay warm in it. I will be in GA a few days before I start my hike so I can sleep out a few nights to test and pick the gear I need for the temp’s they are having.
I have been grounded for about three years as I recovered from two kinds of cancer. This will be my first hiking trip back and will be more a test of the food I have to eat, my condition and my home made gear. The solo route has 8 or 9 shelters along the way if I need to bail to a shelter. The longer route has a few shelters in the first 20 miles or so but then none till near the end. I have everything I need to stay warm in my hammock for any temperature I may need but it just adds some weight to the pack load.
I am on a liquid diet so I have almost no need for cooking/food related gear. I will take a couple of Esbit tablets in case I need to built a fire for some reason but expect to eat no hot food.
My pack will be custom made (by me) for the load I carry. Cuben material and maybe not a conventional pack style. For a really light gear list how much pack/volume do you really need.
As I get closer to hike time I will post a complete gear list for the different weight options I am planning for.
