Nah, you miss the point about what unobtanium offers when alloyed to titanium. It creates a seriously hard edge, one that never, ever needs sharpening. And we don't need no stinkin' weight–all we're going to use it for is to baton wood and behead pesky marmots. Oh, and to look quite cool during happy hour at the hikers' bar.
Tell you what, Josh, send me 4 prototypes. I'll take the pick of the litter and do some serious beta, and send the others on to Roger for austral testing. Who knows, maybe unobtanium performs differently down under. We need to find out, for science.
Feb 15, 2011 at 4:09 pm #1697077"More mundanely:
Nice wall ornament, but no use in the field. Titanium does not hold an adequate edge, and the head will be far too light to cut anything."I'd like to point out that, other than his tongue-in-cheek post, Josh hasn't said the axe is made of titanium. At least not that I can see.

Didn't I mention that it would be more awesome than expected Roger? Have some faith brother. ;)
Feb 15, 2011 at 5:29 pm #1697119Actually it will split stuff in the 3" range nicly, like it was a 24+oz axe, even though it only weighs 4oz. AND its titanium blade will hold an edge forever, No joke.

Josh: AND its titanium blade will hold an edge forever
Ide: Of course, I could be wrong……

That should be astral testing?
Cheers
Feb 16, 2011 at 2:29 am #1697285Mwoah oké,
No member with a second account. Indeed a newby. Some introduction:
Male, Dutch, basic pack weight 8 kg's and looking for ways to be able to trek with my family consisting of me, wife two small kids without having to carry too much. So i'm intersted in large ultralightweight tipi's, woodburning etc. TiGoat is known by me for it's ultralight but big tipi's and smart ideas to keep things light. I Stumbled on this thread by following TiGoat references on twitter. I saw the call for boycot.Professional I have a background in competition law. And from a professional point of view this whole copying business and calling for a boycot of TiGoat is just plain silly and sort of having long toes. I wouldn't have bother to join hadn't I seen that Axe!
Back to the Axe: I want to import 50 of these babies to my country, ofcourse against a wholesale tarrif.
Feb 16, 2011 at 5:54 am #1697305Tired of the Kettle talk – I have a boiler on preorder here and would probably buy the TiiKettle if sold.
Me want TiiAxe!!! Can you give it a hammer pole on the other end for double duty as a stake pounder? My 1.75 lb Fort Turner Trapper Hawk needs a lighter alternative.

Feb 16, 2011 at 6:00 am #1697306I'm a bit of an axe collector….. actually axes where the focus of my acquisition disorder for a number of years, but I can make a broad axe sing…
To the point: I prefer to baton my fire wood with a larger "survival knife". I find it to be much safer feeling when cold, tired, and needing to wear gloves in subzero temps. It also is more suitable to baton wood when your inside a heated tent, as there is less risk of adding ventilation to the tent as well as your self.
I believe that a suitable hack knife or froe could be made from titanium. I would give it a convex edge geometry for splitting and durability. Big knives are often referred to as "sharpened crowbars" and this could do service as a dual use "sharpened potty trowel"
While titanium is "soft" for holding an edge, for this application a UL version of a carbide garden tool sharpener would maintain the edge, and also serve as the best fire-steel striker you ever saw.
Feb 16, 2011 at 6:32 am #1697314James,
TSS (me) has a larger more knife shaped bush tool in the works made from Ti along the same lines as TiGoat's hatchet. They'll make versatile companions.
Josh and I have a solution for the edge retention problem, and it's much beefier than a carbide garden tool sharpener. ;)
I may have said too much already, so that's all I'll be saying. :P
Feb 16, 2011 at 8:29 am #1697364I hadn't read much of the discussion about Ti Goat selling the backcountry boiler knockoff until today, and just… wow.
It's definitely been guaranteed that I will NEVER buy anything from Ti Goat after this, not because he sold a ripoff, or because he made his awful titanium boiler to try to prove a point, but because he acted like a petulant child, insulting Devin and those people who supported Devin's hard work and journey though this whole endeavor. Because he made excuses for the jerks who took advantage of Devin's good nature to beat him to market with his own design, and then pulled his little stunt to try to show us all what horrid hypocrites we are.
What a pathetic display of childishness and pettiness, and after Devin responded with such class. Just sad.
Feb 16, 2011 at 12:40 pm #1697460Welllll
I think Davin's design is a really innovative advance for the UL market, and Ti Goat's design, if it ever reaches production is even more innovative, and both should be congratulated. I imagine the difference in price point alone would put them in different markets, and they ARE very different in design and materials. I will not be boycotting anyone here. As Jack Dempsey points out, these are all just welcome variations on ideas that have been around for a long time, and no patents have been infringed. If Davin and Josh can get along, let's all be happy!
Feb 16, 2011 at 12:48 pm #1697466I'm boycotting Josh's boycott.
So there.
Feb 16, 2011 at 12:53 pm #1697472I'm boycotting this thread, by only reading the last page!
Feb 16, 2011 at 1:09 pm #1697480OK then, I'm boycotting all of you who are boycotting Ti Goat! Ooops, does that mean I'm boycotting Ti Goat too????
Feb 16, 2011 at 2:31 pm #1697505Quite a few nice kettle designs here. I'm happy to see any new designs that are indeed unique. Devin's kettle and the Tii Kettle are both really neat and different products.
Feb 16, 2011 at 5:31 pm #1697563JD, I know you are, but what am I. In all seriousness, if you could not get through the humor, to what lies beneath, you are really slow. Or……a guilty conscience?
Feb 16, 2011 at 5:35 pm #1697564Hmmmmm……well…..
I'm boycotting the boycotting of the boycotters of the boycotters boycotting.

That would help me get some work done, but I dont know ;-)
Feb 17, 2011 at 1:52 am #1697719Yeah close this thread so Josh can work on that Axe! And if someone of TiGoat is reading also: just bring this Tii kettle on the market, don't hold back for some people with unjust sore toes.
Feb 17, 2011 at 1:52 am #1697720Double post
Feb 17, 2011 at 7:01 am #1697755Before the thread actually does close, I'd just like to apologize to everyone for my outburst and ignoble way of reacting.
My one request… please don't ridicule or criticize my Japanese friends or the Japanese people because of my outburst. They had nothing at all to do with my reaction.
If this whole thing can end with the humor that it did, well, that's good enough for me.
Feb 17, 2011 at 5:10 pm #1698061"In all seriousness, if you could not get through the humor, to what lies beneath, you are really slow. Or……a guilty conscience?"
Oh, I got what you were getting at, and the attempt at humor and making a point… I just think the point is idiotic and the method of doing it is childish as hell.
Feb 17, 2011 at 9:06 pm #1698147From an Outsider's point of view-
Just reading this LONG thread….looks like Devin has a great design, but has failed to produce the product for consumer use. Is that not the truth? Seems like those posters who have run to his aid have failed to acknowledge that tiny little fact.
Looks like Darrin copied the design, but at the same time manufactured a less expensive, albeit heavier, alternative.
Devin is a student, appears to me that this is a hobby for him, and only time will tell if he can really, truly deliver the goods.
Seems to me that Darrin is serious about getting the product to market and has done so already.
I have recently seen the m-Kettle and it is by no means cheaply made.
Looks to me that both products can co-exist in the marketplace, one for the SUL crowd… the knock-off for those that place durablilty ahead of counting ounces.
