Let's not forget, the Swiss are neutral. :)
Feb 14, 2011 at 2:44 pm #1696691Has no one but me noticed that Josh has what looks like the coolest hand axe ever? Thread drift be damned–I want a titanium axe!
Feb 14, 2011 at 2:45 pm #1696693You see, I voted for staying out of the debate, before I voted for joining the debate. I made the first statement on our website before I recieved all the hate mail, and calls for a boycott. For those of you that have not read all of this thread, Ryan did not walk away from the mKettle imediately. We have of course recieved support from people and manufactures too, thanks. I even heard a rumor earlier today that another manufacture almost beat me to building a titanium chimney kettle. I want to warn said manufacture right here and now, that if they try to produce said kettle, I will unleash the BPL community on him. You guys are with me on this, Right?…….right?
Is anybody getting it yet? Darren from mKettle would have never had the chance to build the mKettle, had Devin not droppped the ball. I would have never looked that close or been motivated to look so close at chimney kettles had I not had to waste soo much time on the issue, because of the call for a boycott. This is of course not the first time the BPL "community" has rallied around some one or some issue on the grounds of "morality". Please, I call BS. Does anybody remember when I reached out to the "community" as a wronged manufacture? Does any body remember the response, and or lack there of? Many in the BPL "community" are a bunch of hypocrits, plain and simple. This particular "moral" assault has been launched from one of weakest platforms that I can possibly imagine, as far as this industry is concerned. So by all means, boycott Titanium Goat, we've had a running boycott on us since before we were actually in business, nothing new, just dont pretent to be justified in your actions, because you are not.
In case there are people that still dont get it, The Tii Kettle was built to make the point that the direct copying of Devin's kettle is not the main issue here, as has been stated. Thank you Devin for your quick reaction to the Tii kettle, it was text book. I'm sure everyone will take the results of the Tii kettle excersise the way they want to see it.
Tim
How many years does Devin need? even patents run out after 17 years. So I need to wait 6 months from when? I think Darren might be in the clear depending on when the 6 month waiting period starts.
Slightly edited, Roger Caffin

Its not just titanium, but a titanium-unobtainium alloy. You have to pre-order them, and they may or may not ever get built. Well….then again, maybe someone else could copy one for you? What if that looked like the only way to get one to market?
On a personal note, I've neglected you, but it is still being worked on, sorry.
Feb 14, 2011 at 3:08 pm #1696702"Darren from mKettle would have never had the chance to build the mKettle, had Devin not droppped the ball."
Not sure I would characterize it quite that way. Devin was perhaps a bit naive to think that the idea wouldn't get out and around as he shared it with the BPL community during its formative stages. I have no doubt he won't be so naive in the future, which is a bit of a shame.
I enjoyed reading about the project, reading about its development and evolution and the trials and tribulations he encountered along the way. I've never been so intimately involved in the development of a product before, and it was very gratifying – and will be doubly so when I actually have mine in hand!
But the BPL forums are public forums, after all. I'd surmise that there are many, many lurkers here who never contribute in any way. So the boiler was bound to get out to those with no familial ties to our little community.
I also don't think blaming Devin for Darren's apparent lack of integrity is the right thing to do. I applaud him for having so much fun sharing his creation with us. And I'm sorry that the entire episode has probably left a bit of a bitterness in its wake, for far too many people, and has left us, as all too often happens, foolishly fighting amongst ourselves.
Feb 14, 2011 at 3:29 pm #1696707Alright, the axe did me in. I've been quiet for seven, long, laborious pages of this thread…
Yes, the axe was the first (maybe only) thing I noticed in the picture…
…because, now every time I see, or hear the word, "kettle" my brain automatically wants to say, "Children, please, quit fighting over your toys (or others')…"
Devin: Cheers buddy! Awesome kettle you've designed there… (and your attitude, throughout the whole process, seems top notch)
Darren (or whoever you are): Ballsy move… pretty lame, imho, but I guess it's the way the cookie crumbled (and yes, I enjoy eating crumbles…I'm like a mouse just looking for some pieces of this "pie") — you've helped feed this monster, the contagion, which we, the consumers, have grown accustomed to: consumer capitalism.
Josh: Keep making badass stuff — enough said.
Cheers BPL community. It is, after all, Valentine's Day… :P

OK so introducing the Montgomery Goat heart-shaped double chimney boiler. X~P
Feb 14, 2011 at 4:07 pm #1696715Boy, you can't buy this kind of publicity..
I think that by know it is clear that there is only one villain, a hero and another character that you can love or hate depending on your point of view.
In the meantime I have ordered a few more bits from the other character because I still think that as much as Josh may rub a few people the wrong way he took steps to rectify the situation , not an easy thing to do when your livelihood is involved.
I was a buyer with a budget of several millions of dollars a year so I am very familiar with getting into (unknowingly..) some situations that can be seen morally or ethically wrong.
I learned from those but when you buy hundreds of lines from a dozen or so of suppliers (as I did…) sometime $hit happens.
Of course nothing ever goes wrong if you just sit in front of the computer and spend somebody else's time and money .
Anyway with the bits I bought from Josh I am going to make a better wood burning stove than the one he sells.
(my prototype has already cost me more than buying one from TiGoat, but I reckon by the third or fourth I will have it just right. ETA 2015 )
Franco
BTW, that Swiss thing was made for an alcohol stove and or the Borde (Bomb) stove not to burn wood. (I had one)Feb 14, 2011 at 4:32 pm #1696722Franco
What! better than what I build? ;-)
Advertising? Is that all that I've accomplished?
Feb 14, 2011 at 4:35 pm #1696723Feb 14, 2011 at 4:42 pm #1696729As someone with some inside information about that Axe, I'd just like to promise you all that it's going to be much more badass than it appears.. ;)
Feb 14, 2011 at 4:46 pm #1696731I don't even need an axe and I still want one :)
Feb 14, 2011 at 4:57 pm #1696737Why wouldn't you want a kettle that was hot, not cool?

Feb 14, 2011 at 5:19 pm #1696747This sort of out of context, but there is no way I will use any sort epoxy laminate anywhere near food or drinking water above ambient temperatures. I work with the stuff and will continue to work with it. I have to accept that one day the cumulative exposure may catch up with me and the allergic reactions will make it impossible for me to continue exposing my self. It breaks down with heat and uv and while I dont have the research in front of me I would be surprised if any of the epoxy manufacturers would support this application. I am a fan of Tigoats products and engineering and am planning on purchasing more of their products, just not these.
Feb 14, 2011 at 5:28 pm #1696751Josh,
I wasn't trying to say that you should wait to bring out a kettle, if you choose to do so. I was saying that the timing sucks because of all the frustrations that already exist over Devin's design being made by mkettle. I wasn't really even trying to say that your timing sucks or that Devin is due a time of non competition. I love Devin (as is clear many of us do) and want to see him do well with his design, which has filled a need in this area. I know there will be other products that fill the same need, this always happens. I think had you revealed your kettle in 6 months nobody would care (i mean they wouldn't be mad) but as it is this thread was already full of people upset with mkettle, and many of them with you for carrying it (not sure that is 100% fair) and the announcement of a kettle now has just added fuel to this fire. Your approach to the kettle is very intriguing and has sparked ideas for me also (no i won't have a kettle for you guys next week sorry, i move way too slow). I have no problems with Ti Goat at all and have enjoyed the few times we've e-mailed. I was just saying that the timing of the announcement sucked because it basically guaranteed attack(because it was given to an already angry mob with torches). Good luck and I hope there is no bad blood between us.

Cool name by the way. The amines in uncured epoxy are nothing compared to "ure"thanes, I've worked with both for years. It is the uncured resins that pose a heath risk in both of these, not cured product. But to each his own, especially when it comes to plastics. The beer can debate has pretty well already polorized this arguement. We work with one of the largest carbon fiber manufactures in the US, and build some of our own carbon fiber products from scratch also. We were in direct contact with resin and fiber manufactures when we started building the carbon lids, and its a non-issue. As long as you have water in the pot, it cant exceed working temp. Working temps are well under the temps at which the plastic will degrade/decompose. There is a very small amount of resin there anyway, and the carbon is of course neutral.
Besides you cant buy the Tii Kettle anyway.
Feb 14, 2011 at 5:57 pm #1696759Does anyone have some ultralight tar and feathers? ;)
The Tii kettle is a clear departure from the Backcountry Boiler and as such is a legitimate venture. It's not Josh's obligation to give others who may offer something in the same general class of devices a "sporting head start." I've got no beef with the Tii. On the contrary, I think it's great that innovation is sparking innovation. I think the perpendicular walls of the burning vessel on the Tii will give it greater stability over other designs.
Now, the market will take over. Those unfamiliar with Darren's perfidy may well purchase the relatively inexpensive mKettle even though it's heavier than the BC Boiler. Those with the cash may shell out for the very light weight Tii. With all of the innovations popping up, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more before we're done.

Feb 15, 2011 at 8:01 am #1696911Oké where can I pre-order this titanium unobtainium alloy axe (understanding that the ingredients of the alloy is secret)?
Indeed I don't like this TiGoat bashing thread it's about nothing, no patents violated. A bit of copying which was sort of accepted after explanation and then some improvement which wasn't accepted by some and resulted in a call for a boycot by….japanese people. Inhabitants of japan are used to copying and improving. Strange/silly people here on this forum.

Odd way to introduce yourself to this community.
Feb 15, 2011 at 9:49 am #1696938I think this is a member, that most likely already posted on this thread, who went through the trouble of registering as a guest to add another couple of cents, anonymously. Nothing really to base this on, but probably not far fetched. Fine with me.
Feb 15, 2011 at 1:03 pm #1696998My "2nd explanation of alternative construction for manufacture" seems to have been lost under more debate.
Feb 15, 2011 at 1:14 pm #1697002I think we need to field test this axe first … 3 samples please.
More mundanely:
Nice wall ornament, but no use in the field. Titanium does not hold an adequate edge, and the head will be far too light to cut anything.
(Oh shut up Roger!)Cheers
Feb 15, 2011 at 1:24 pm #1697006Sorry again, Alan!
I think I do understand what you're saying, but deep drawing a non-cylindrical part like that would still cost a lot more until volume got up to the level of, well, soda cans. :)
Try that DIY version, I'd love to see it.
Best,
DevinFeb 15, 2011 at 2:29 pm #1697033Subject says it all, very pretty.
No weight, no edge.
As useful as an ash tray on Harley. -
