I’ve used a Weller pistol grip 140 watt soldering gun with a cutting tip on silnylon, no-see-um netting, 1.4 oz ripstop and 220 denier nylon. It works well but is slow, expecially if you’re cutting anything heavier. I assume more wattage would be faster, but don’t know if there is a maximum. If you keep the tip moving, more heat shouldn’t be a problem. I first tried a 30 watt pencil tip soldering iron, but it was not hot enough. A straight edge or stiff pattern material to follow with the tip is helpful, as free-hand cutting is difficult. 1/8″ x 4′ x 8′ Masonite hard board makes a good and inexpensive cutting mat. I used this combination for making a tarp, a tent, and a down quilt. I have since switched to a cutting wheel and prefer it for ease and speed. Good luck!
