Anyone who is interested in a 200+ mile hike along the beautiful shores and ridges of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota will find interest in the Superior Hiking Trail (http://shta.org).
Soon to be legislated as part of the 4400 mile North Country Trail the SHT is considered some of the finest country along the route. The SHT is adjacent with two other trails of good distance as well. The Border Route Trail (http://borderroutetrail.org) and the Kekakabic Trail (http://www.kek.org) are adjacent to the North and West of the SHT. Linking all three trails can provide a dedicated hiker with a month of hiking.
My account of the Superior Hiking Trail from early May, 2005 is available in the backpacking section of my Web Site. If you’re interested in this hike feel free to check out my photos and journal.
Jul 12, 2007 at 1:08 pm #1395184If your time only allowed 4-5 days on the SHT, where would you suggest starting/ending for the most spectacular views and hiking? I have friends coming up from Dallas and they want to hike the SHT, but I am having a hard time deciding where to start. We are talking about doing 12 mile days.
Jul 13, 2007 at 5:50 am #1395270If you are willing to hike a 48 or 60 mile section of the trail it is hard to go wrong because there are highlights every 5 to 10 miles. My personal choice for a trip of that length would be from Tetteguce state park to the sawbill trail.
Sep 3, 2007 at 9:37 pm #1400941The portion along Pictured Rocks is especially noteworthy.
edit: reading your post again I realize how much of an idiot I am.
Sep 4, 2007 at 7:47 pm #1401058Even though they may not be on the Superior Hiking Trail they are a part of the North Country Trail of which the SHT is also a part of. So you may be an idiot but at least you have good taste in beautiful trails. ; )
Sep 4, 2007 at 11:03 pm #1401083Well thanks for the support on that one. This is probably the first year in like 20 when I haven't been able to make it up to Pictured Rocks. Such is life I guess…
