Hey all. I’m in the market for my, “30%,” pack, mainly to be used as a winter daypack and a pack for quick one-nighters in milder weather. My other packs are a 55 liter HMG pack which I love mainly because it just fits me so well, and a Mountainsmith lumbar pack for summer day hikes.
I prefer some structure vs a frameless pack. As this is a part-time pack I’d prefer to keep the cost around $200. Some I’ve looked at are:
Durston Kakwa 40 liter
Gossamer Kumo 36
Granite Gear perimeter 35/Crown 40
various Osprey/Gregory/REI packs.
any and all comments/suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.Nov 13, 2024 at 8:04 am #3822065This is the 35L framed pack I’m going to pull the trigger on Black Friday (HMG always has 20% off sitewide on BF). https://hyperlitemountaingear.com/products/waypoint-35?variant=41888948551725
A good framed pack isn’t going to be found for $200, at least not new anyway. However, the GG Gorilla 40 can be bought for $234 with code TAKELESS24.
Nov 13, 2024 at 8:35 am #3822067My old Osprey Skimmer is the perfect 36L pack for me. I’ve been trying to replace it, because I can’t replace the broken chest strap, but I’ve tried and returned numerous packs and not found a good replacement. I just returned the GG Kumo; too floppy with no structure and puts a big “lump” near my back when packed full, and it’s hard to insert and remove things from the very narrow main pouch. It also has teeny weeny hip belt pockets (although so does the old Osprey). I did like the built in chest strap pockets on the Kumo.
I also tried the Granite Gear perimeter, but I couldn’t reach water bottles with the pack on. It’s also too big to fit under an airline seat, one of my requirements. I tried the newer Osprey in about that size, but the side pockets were so deep, they drowned a 1 liter Smartwater bottle, and a Nalgene (which I use in winter) couldn’t be removed at all with the pack on.
If you find a great pack, let us know!
Nov 13, 2024 at 8:45 am #3822068I definitely looked at the Waypoint, and it looks like a great pack. I may do the same, but would prefer something a little cheaper. I’ll look at the Girilla again. Thanks!
Nov 13, 2024 at 3:13 pm #3822098That HMG will scrunch down pretty small and still weigh less or the same as a lot of smaller packs.
Nov 14, 2024 at 8:04 am #3822137I got an email today with a 15% discount code so I pulled the trigger on the HMG Waypoint! It’s more than I budgeted, (Isn’t it always, LOL), but I love my 55 liter Junction, and, hey, I took the email as a sign!
BTW, the discount code is BUILTWITHPURPOSE, and is only good for today. Works for some other brands, too.
thanks for your input and I’ll do a report!
