16 hour course on first aid in the backcountry. Lots of hands on scenarios for practice. The course I attended in AZ in May 2006 was taught by an EMT from Pennsylvania and an EMT/ski patroller from Colorado. The instructors and curriculum were excellent. Included dislocation reduction, focused spinal assessment, epinephrine administration, wound management, shock, hypothermia, heat distress, etc. CPR is not included. The course is approved by the American Camping Association, USFS, and other government agencies. Includes Wilderniess First Aid certification from WMI. The focus is on being thorough in your assessment of the situation and taking care of your patient’s well being (including mental and emotional state and physical comfort). Firts aid kits are discussed at the very end of the course with no pressure to buy WMI gear or to carry a heavy first aid kit. Some nice lightweight options for kit components are available through WMI as well as full (and more weighty) kits. I don’t plan to change what first aid gear I carry when travelling solo, but I feel incredibly more well equipped to respond to emergencies with the knowledge I gained from this course.
