Here's one my favorites: using my foamer as a windscreen on a canister stove. This shot is at Lewis and Clark pass with Sam Haraldson on 2009 Parcour:
It's much easier in winter b/c of the snow.

Jan 10, 2010 at 11:34 am #1561391It doesn't have to be. You could do it on an Aquafina bottle just as easily. The picture is only for reference.

Great idea on using your foam pad as a wind screen!!
Jan 10, 2010 at 9:19 pm #1561538Mule, That's pretty clever, wrapping your windscreen around a nalgene. I use Nalgene bottles all the time for short hikes just 'cause they feel solid. This is a great idea. Hadn't thought of that before, I usually stick mine in the cooking pot as it's deep enough.
Jan 10, 2010 at 9:19 pm #1561539Good idea, using the foam as a wind break. Mine, when I used foam pads, always seem to blow over and I had to reinforce it. Still, it works well in moderate wind.

You're a very clever fellow Timo. We need to get you a regular column here. :-)
Cheers,
Rick
p.s. How was the pizza?
Jan 12, 2010 at 3:43 pm #1562109Love the Leatherman antenna idea. Smart thinking.

Plus a citronella tiki torch oil (scented kerosene)
Equals a stove that cooks and repels mosquitoes at the same time. Does that count if both purposes must be done at the same time?
Jan 21, 2010 at 6:35 pm #1565023@Johann: it only really works when you can solidly secure the foamer. Otherwise, it won't work.
Jan 21, 2010 at 7:17 pm #1565047The MSR stove works as a cooking stove, and it can also be used as an eyebrow removal system.
–B.G.–Jan 26, 2010 at 5:06 pm #1566543Everybody is drinking out of something. So you are going to have a mug of some kind. Unless it is some tiny titanium thing it will probably be a few oz. These mugs weigh in at between 4oz(16fl.oz) to 9.5 oz.(24 fl.oz) However broken down they make a very powerful volcano shaped stove and can also be used as windscreens/potstands for a back-up alcohol stove in one type of configuration or another. It seems to speed up boil times by a minute or so than without the mug. The stoves themselves are usually around 3 oz or so. Very fast boil times, and capable of burning for an hour or more if you have enough wood. Doesnt take much.
Jan 27, 2010 at 3:19 am #1566698scented kerosene. Amazing. Maybe brilliant. How well does it work??
Are there any negatives? I assume the fumes are safe enough to be working over the stove? Doesn't produce any smoke or soot does it?
Funny thing I mostly use my MSR Dragonfly in winter.

For me, the scented kerosene would probably mean an instant asthma attack. I've tried stuff sold as odorless kerosene at Lowes/homedepot and it works pretty well in my Optimus Nova; it really is pretty odorless compared to regular kerosene.Jan 30, 2010 at 4:24 am #1567822@ Brent
How do you get the stove on and off the mug? I am assuming that you have found a way for the bottom of the mug to be removable. Does this cause any issues? Such as the bottom dropping off or the like? Looks like an interesting concept.
