Hey Everyone,
I am going to be building some lightweight tapered tarps using polyester spinnaker and 1443 series soft sided Tyvek. The tarp will be 8.5' long and will be 70" wide on one end and 50" wide on the other end. The poly spinnaker material weighs 1.21oz per square yard and the 1443 series Tyvek weighs 1.25oz per square yard so the tarp should have a base weight of 6.25oz. I will install 8 webbing loops and include a stuff sack with the tarp. I estimate the total weight to be under 10oz. If anyone is interested I plan to sell the Tyvek model for $60 and the Spinnaker model for $75. I will include free shipping via USPS. The color options for the Tyvek are white and for the the Spinnaker are white and blueish grey. Once I get the material next week I will be building the prototype. Once that is finished I will post a few pictures on here to see if this is something you are interested in. If you have any questions you can address them on the forum or contact me through my email at [email protected]
Thanks,

Dec 9, 2009 at 5:25 am #1551855Would be good to see, the spin version interests me.
Dec 9, 2009 at 6:11 pm #1552123Would you guys like to see a lighter weight spinnaker used? The only problem with lighter weight spinnaker is the tear strength goes out the window.
I could always build a Cuben version. I could use the .75oz version giving a base weight of 3.75 oz with a total weight around 7-8oz. The size would be reduced from 70"x50"x8.5' to 64"x44"x8.5' It wouldn't be cheap though. Maybe $130? If anyone is interested let me know and I will build a prototype.
Cheers,
LawsonDec 9, 2009 at 8:36 pm #1552164I would be interested in seeing either the Cuben or Spin versions,
Dec 11, 2009 at 8:22 am #1552673Would you rather see Cuben, Spinn or Tyvek giving the sizes and prices?
Dec 11, 2009 at 8:40 am #1552680I am more interested in the cuben and spinn.
Dec 11, 2009 at 8:42 am #1552681Cuben over spin or tyvek.
Dec 11, 2009 at 8:45 am #1552683I would prefer cuben and/or spinn
Dec 11, 2009 at 12:33 pm #1552795With that in mind.
Is it sized right?
Spinn: 8.5' Long 70" wide front and 50" wide back.
Cuben: 8.5' Long 64" wide front and 44" wide back.Dec 11, 2009 at 12:49 pm #1552801> Is it sized right?
Dimensions look on the slightly lower end of what's out there. I like that.
I don't like tyvek. I used the 1443R for a bivy on a thru hike and it started ripping immediately. Plus it's a magnet for collected twigs and pine needles, etc.
Weight savings on the spinnaker you mention seems minimal. I'd agree with the above that cuben for light weight expensive and sil for cheaper models seems to be the best options out there.
