I thought long and hard about the two over two years ago while planning a Colorado Trail thru. In the end I got the Grace Solo mainly because I wanted a more open feel. The Patrol, although having many fine features, seemed too much of a compromise between a tarp and a tent… which didn't fit in with my thinking. I've found the Grace Solo to be an excellent shelter and very lightweight in Spectralite.
I'll second the tarp. I've got the MLD Grace Solo in cuben and I love it. Very well made and very durable. I've had tarp tent type shelters in the past. Once I switched to a tarp there was no going back.
Keep in mind that once a bivy is added to the equation, the added protection of the patrol shelter will not make much of a difference in comparison to a tarp.
I too considered the grace vs patrol. I ended up with a Grace Solo in spectralite. Its a great item if you have the coins for it. If not I'm sure the silnylon version is also great.
