aluminum foil lid
=============Question:
How do you make an aluminum foil lid for a cook pot?
I always take the lid that came with the pot (heavy by UL standards) or I use an old aluminum pie plate and hold that down with a rock.
I mean, I’m pretty sure I could make a good one (I think) but, does anyone have some experience to share?
A. Big pot vs small pot?
B. How do you store it for a long trip?
C. Does it get goopy with food when you cook with it?
thanks,

A. I use a foil muffin wrapper for my Snowpeak 600 cup. When flattened, it is slightly larger than the cup opening, so I just fold it over the edge of the cup when cooking.
B. I re-flatten, then fold it in half and store it in the cup with a giga stove and a sparklite. A 110g canister fits in last and perfectly covers the opening for storage. (I drilled a small hole near the lip of the cup to break a vacuum seal.) I also tie a small loop of cord around the canister to form a pull handle to remove the canister from the cup.
C. Sorry. I do the boil-in-bag thing, so I can’t comment on goopy food. :-)
Cheers,
-Mike
Feb 20, 2006 at 2:19 pm #1350874Here are several ways to make a foil lid. For all of these, you can make a good handle for the lid from aluminum tape. Flue tape is good for higher temperatures than aluminum repair tape, but the temp of the lid won’t challenge either one. Just cut 1/2 inch of the tape, fold it in the middle for 1/2 inch, leaving 2 tabs to stick to the lid. Simple, light, foolproof.
The lightest and simplest lid is heavy duty aluminum foil, cut a disk 1″larger than the top of the pot, then roll the edge over to make a ‘bead’ that will give the foil some body. Then stick on the tape handle.
Oven liner or a pie pan will make a more durable lid. Cut a disk larger than what you need and mold it against the lid that came with the pot or just shape it over the pot itself. Again, stick the tape handle on and you are done.

I used the bottom of my inverted pot as a form. I left the foil in a square shape (4 layers thick) then formed and burnished it over the pot. I then held a marker 1″ below the pot bottom using a book as a guide. I rotated the pot to mark a line on the lid all the way around. I then cut on the line and I was finished. The tape idea for a lift tab is great. I’m going to add that to mine. I think I’ll try putting a piece around the edge also.
How do you store it for a long trip?
The pot I use is a 7oz Sterno can and I have found a plastic bowl with a lid that it nests into like a glove. I place the lid on the bottom of the pot and then place them into the bowl. This protects both the lid and the somewhat fragile pot.
Does it get goopy with food when you cook with it?
Since I only boil water in my pot I don’t have that problem.
