I was wondering if anyone knew the practicality of hemp for hiking clothing, especially when blended with synthetic fabrics. I read that it is naturally anti-microbial, breathes well, wicks moisture, and is very durable.
By the way, I am not a pothead or an eco-warrior, just looking at all the practical fabric options available.
Feb 10, 2006 at 10:34 am #1350319Hemp is a very nice fabric. Hemp is a very nice plant in ALOT of ways actually. Im talking about real, industrail grade hemp here. Not Marijuana. Industrial hemp has almost non-existant levels of THC. Without exageration, we could feed and clothe the world, break our oil dependency, and so much more if the growth of industrial hemp were allowed in the US. Hemp is a virtual miracle plant. And Im “not a pothead or an eco-warrior” either.
Hemp makes very durable, very soft, clothes. Im not sure its anti microbial, but it does breathe well, it absorbs moisture without much structurale change (it tends to maintain some of its insulating ability, not as good as wool, but better than cotton), and due to the length, diameter, and strength of the fibers it is as strong as linen, and if worn often becomes softer than your favorite pair of jeans.
Unfortunatly, hemp is still (has reverted?) back to its infancy in the clothing arena. It has so much potential as a raw *and* processed fabric, but its not really being persued. The main exporter of hemp products is Romania, and they dont have alot of the tools needed to really maximize hemps attributes.
In the mean time, if you can find a nice Hemp or Hemp/poly item youd like to try out, give it a shot.
Ive got a pair of hemp shorts I bought 10 years ago that have got the most use, and lasted longer than any of my others. Ive worn them day hiking, but never had the guts to wear them when I KNEW it would be wet and cold out, so I dont know how they perform in that arena.
